New Year, New Hair!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Want to know how we kicked off the new year? Probably a lot like you all with some fun NYE parties, a lot of germs (this winter cold business is awful!) and most importantly with some New Education to kick start our year!

Today, we had Jeffrey Scott from Aveda in for a fantastic color class discussing 7 new ideas for our team. We spent our day watching and doing these new techniques, trying them all out on our mannequins!

Probably the most exciting part of the day was that each of these techniques and placements are actually wearable and do-able on everyone! This wasn't a class focused on crazy trends or things that takes hours to do or requires you come back for maintenance every 2 weeks.

A huge shout-out to Jeffrey Scott for a fantastic day! Thanks for visiting Maryland!

Take a look at some of our fun day!

Fashion Colors in Your Hair!

Do you LOVE the pictures on pinterest and instagram these days with all sorts of rainbow and unicorn colors for your hair? We do too BUT sometimes we cringe when you show us those pictures at your hair appointment.

Why, you ask? Because the reality is those colors are most definitely FASHION colors and take a lot of work to get there, a lot of maintenance to keep and most importantly, a lot of those pictures are edited before posting.

What we can tell you is that more than half our stylists have been certified by Aveda in Kinetic Color which is their version of education in the trend colors you are seeing. Aveda colors are based in nature so therefore, you may not get all the crazy neon colors utilizing Aveda but the cool part is, you will get some amazing colors while still keeping your hair healthy with their 97% naturally based color line unlike others (ahem manic panic)

So if you are looking for amazingly cool colors in your hair yet sticking true to having healthy, beautiful hair, look no further than our stylists Kara, Breann and Sarah. All three of them had a blast taking Kinetic Color this year, playing with the 1000s (yes I said THOUSANDS) of color formulations to create every shade imaginal that is in nature. (Side note, Aveda colors don't make Hot Pink or the perfect Teal. Why? You show us it in nature truly and we will figure out how to make it!)

When you want one of these colors we HIGHLY suggest sending us a snap but the basics are this:

- These Colors Take TIME. Expect your appointment to last anywhere from 2-8 hours depending on previous hair color, length of hair and current color.

- These Colors can be expensive. Why? Because we usually have to use a LOT of color to get a true saturation and traditionally we must lift your color out first before putting on the Fun Stuff

- These are fashion colors. That means they will not last forever. Expect to have a major upkeep involved when doing these colors.

Here's a few snapshots of training for our class. We love love loved our educator, Jeffrey Scott from Aveda and learned so much not just about Fashion colors BUT hair color in general!

Welcoming our First American Board Certified Haircolorist!

It's been a busy summer over at Thirty Hair including several new hires!

Today, we want to introduce Breann who officially hits our floor this week!

Breann comes to us from Florida, although she is originally from New Jersey. Her and her fiance have moved here this summer and are enjoying making new roots in Baltimore. Breann loves to hike, enjoys great sushi and loves a good pair of shoes. (I mean what girl doesn't?!)

Breann brings to us a long resume of education but the biggest one is the American Board Certification for Haircolorists. This certification includes a written test, a performance test and an effective skills in solving color challenges test. Only 70% of test takers pass.

We are excited for you to meet Breann and enjoy her color knowledge. Breann works Tuesday through Saturday. Her specialty is dimensional color and extensions.

Here's a peek at some of her work!

New Techniques for Balayage!

Over here at Thirty Hair, we have the pleasure of taking classes with Alia from Aveda Education on a monthly basis. This past month, our class was all about dimension with new techniques. We learned a lot about how to blend our old techniques with the new ones. As a team, we tried out 4 new techniques on our mannequins and then continued grow by applying what we learned on both mannequins and real life clients.

When asking for your handpainting services, know that there are many different techniques that can be used to get to your final result. Previous color services, length and condition of the hair are all huge factors when determining the best plan for your services each visit.

One question that always comes up is the cost. Most balayage services are lower-maintenance but at the time of the service they take more product and time than the average service. While you may not need to get the full service refreshed as quickly, you may need to get a glaze and conditioning treatment halfway between your balayage appointments.

Short Hair, Don't Care

It seems that we have a flurry of activity over here at Thirty Hair lately. Between the temporary addition of Salon Marielle while they await decisions on their flood-ravaged salon, back to school and work cuts and colors and lots of new remodeling additions at our salon, the only thing that's constantly the same is all the beautiful hair we are sending out the door!

We have been seeing a lot of shorter hairstyles this summer with a lot of dimensional color either with foils or hand-painting. (for more about that different click here) Here are just a few pictures of our latest beautiful hairstyles heading out to enjoy the sunshine!!

Summer Hair

The sun is FINALLY shining, it's getting warmer and we finally can tell it's SUMMER!

What better way to celebrate than with some fun new summer hair color!

Did you know there's a million ways to brighten and freshen your hair color while staying low maintenance?

Remember these few tips for summer hair health:

* Before swimming in any water, wet your hair down completely with tap water. We suggest taking some daily hair repair or shampure conditioner and work it through your wet hair and then place your hair in a topknot or a braid. It will keep it conditioning while you are having fun in the sun and protect if from tangles, sun and water damage.

* Deep conditioning more frequently will help protect your hair from more mechanical damage and environmental damage. Summer time, we tend to flat iron more to keep our hair smoother and less frizzy and in turn, we cause more breakage issues. Using Smooth Infusion Masque or Damage Remedy Mask will help to alleviate the frizz issues and remedy split ends.

*Clarify your hair after swimming with the right shampoo. Remember that many clarifying shampoos are not color-safe and strip your hair of your color and also strips you of all your natural oils. We highly suggest the Sun Care line for summer hair. It helps remove chlorine and mineral build up, rebalance dry scalp and keep your color safe!

*Use Sunscreen!! Remember places like tops of your ears, your part line in your hair and your neckline. Many people are already complaining of sunburns on their part especially when wearing braids which are a major trend this summer. Keep yourself protected from the sun's harm!

Blondes have more fun!

It's beginning to look and feel a lot like spring around here at Thirty Hair.

We've been busy making lots of people ready for spring by lightening and brightening their hair color. A little known fact about Aveda is how gentle their lighteners are!

We love creating fun transformations for people's hair. Check out some of our favorite blondes of this spring!

Hair Color Changes, Pastel Hair and Olaplex...

Insight on Aveda Hair Color from one of our New Stylist's Isabelle...

Since I have finished hair school, I have played with lots of different color lines and lets just say Aveda is my favorite! I love that I can change each formula to fit everyone who sits in my chair because let's be honest we don't all have the same head of hair. That being said, I love to change my haircolor. Earlier this year I was a redhead and thanks to olaplex, within two visits, I was a blonde with no breakage! I decided I was ready for a change which turned into quite a project thanks to Sarah, who is training me on Aveda Color.

2015 is the year of pastels so of course I had to try out the trend!

Over the year, we saw so many stars rocking the pastel pinks, blues and purples. For a while now, I have been dying to have rose gold hair and haven't been able to find just the right formula in an easy fashion. I tried several brands as Aveda isn't always known for it's pastels and funky but Sarah pushed me to look outside the normal formulation box with Aveda and figure out how to break it down to make the perfect rose gold. Thanks to how Aveda formulates, with a little time and thought, you can make any of your color wishes come true if your stylist is willing to put in the effort.

When trying to figure it out, I turned to one of Aveda's best color educator's Lupe Voss for her insight. That's the cool part about this industry, we have all these amazing artists who are willing to help others grow. So I started with research on Lupe Voss's instagram and her group chat on hairbrained. After I found what I thought were good formulas, I took real hair and tried swatches of the best two formulas I had come up with for the perfect rose gold.

After a few hours of research and playing, I finally found the perfect shade and couldn't be happier with the results. Here's to beautiful pastel hair with Aveda! ~ Isabelle
