New Year, New Hair!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Want to know how we kicked off the new year? Probably a lot like you all with some fun NYE parties, a lot of germs (this winter cold business is awful!) and most importantly with some New Education to kick start our year!

Today, we had Jeffrey Scott from Aveda in for a fantastic color class discussing 7 new ideas for our team. We spent our day watching and doing these new techniques, trying them all out on our mannequins!

Probably the most exciting part of the day was that each of these techniques and placements are actually wearable and do-able on everyone! This wasn't a class focused on crazy trends or things that takes hours to do or requires you come back for maintenance every 2 weeks.

A huge shout-out to Jeffrey Scott for a fantastic day! Thanks for visiting Maryland!

Take a look at some of our fun day!

Welcoming our First American Board Certified Haircolorist!

It's been a busy summer over at Thirty Hair including several new hires!

Today, we want to introduce Breann who officially hits our floor this week!

Breann comes to us from Florida, although she is originally from New Jersey. Her and her fiance have moved here this summer and are enjoying making new roots in Baltimore. Breann loves to hike, enjoys great sushi and loves a good pair of shoes. (I mean what girl doesn't?!)

Breann brings to us a long resume of education but the biggest one is the American Board Certification for Haircolorists. This certification includes a written test, a performance test and an effective skills in solving color challenges test. Only 70% of test takers pass.

We are excited for you to meet Breann and enjoy her color knowledge. Breann works Tuesday through Saturday. Her specialty is dimensional color and extensions.

Here's a peek at some of her work!

Short Hair, Don't Care

It seems that we have a flurry of activity over here at Thirty Hair lately. Between the temporary addition of Salon Marielle while they await decisions on their flood-ravaged salon, back to school and work cuts and colors and lots of new remodeling additions at our salon, the only thing that's constantly the same is all the beautiful hair we are sending out the door!

We have been seeing a lot of shorter hairstyles this summer with a lot of dimensional color either with foils or hand-painting. (for more about that different click here) Here are just a few pictures of our latest beautiful hairstyles heading out to enjoy the sunshine!!

Sunscreen for the skin, face and hair!

Have you ever worn your hair with a part and been outside in the sun all day, forgetting to apply sunscreen and ending up with a nasty burn? (Don't worry you aren't the only one!)

How about gone outside on a cloudy day thinking that it's just an hour and it won't be too much sun?

The best is when you love to drive with your sunroof open but can't figure out just why your hair color especially on the left side keeps fading.

WELCOME to SUMMER :)

Here's a few tips and tricks for you:

To protect you hair color in the sun there's a few things:

When swimming, apply a leave in conditioner prior to jumping in the pool or ocean. Apply it and braid your hair or put it in a bun then enjoy swimming while not destroying your hair!

Deep Condition after prolonged time in the water! Let it sink into your hair for a good 10-20 minutes for extra moisture and protection.

Utilize a color-protecting spray such as the Aveda Sun Care Spray. It's amazing at keeping your color exactly the color you started with!

For your skin there are many options to think of such as:

Loading up on a great sunscreen. Don't forget your neck and ears though!

Utilizing a tinted moisturizer with a strong SPF. Several of our stylists LOVE Aveda's Tinted moisturizers because they give a strong pigment while blocking out the sun. Great to protect you from aging, sunburns and it gives your skin an even glow!

Wearing a hat AFTER applying sunscreen everywhere!

Most importantly, remember to reapply!!

We hope this gives you a few tips and tricks to help you these summer months. Stay Cool!

Hair Color Changes, Pastel Hair and Olaplex...

Insight on Aveda Hair Color from one of our New Stylist's Isabelle...

Since I have finished hair school, I have played with lots of different color lines and lets just say Aveda is my favorite! I love that I can change each formula to fit everyone who sits in my chair because let's be honest we don't all have the same head of hair. That being said, I love to change my haircolor. Earlier this year I was a redhead and thanks to olaplex, within two visits, I was a blonde with no breakage! I decided I was ready for a change which turned into quite a project thanks to Sarah, who is training me on Aveda Color.

2015 is the year of pastels so of course I had to try out the trend!

Over the year, we saw so many stars rocking the pastel pinks, blues and purples. For a while now, I have been dying to have rose gold hair and haven't been able to find just the right formula in an easy fashion. I tried several brands as Aveda isn't always known for it's pastels and funky but Sarah pushed me to look outside the normal formulation box with Aveda and figure out how to break it down to make the perfect rose gold. Thanks to how Aveda formulates, with a little time and thought, you can make any of your color wishes come true if your stylist is willing to put in the effort.

When trying to figure it out, I turned to one of Aveda's best color educator's Lupe Voss for her insight. That's the cool part about this industry, we have all these amazing artists who are willing to help others grow. So I started with research on Lupe Voss's instagram and her group chat on hairbrained. After I found what I thought were good formulas, I took real hair and tried swatches of the best two formulas I had come up with for the perfect rose gold.

After a few hours of research and playing, I finally found the perfect shade and couldn't be happier with the results. Here's to beautiful pastel hair with Aveda! ~ Isabelle

What's Behind a Professional Hair Color

Ever wonder what it takes to get a professional hair color? Why it costs so much? Or what the difference between those boxes at the grocery store? In a series of blogs, we hope to debunk some myths about coloring your hair as well as help you to understand the process!

First off, to even access Aveda hair color, you must be a licensed cosmetologist or barber AND work in a licensed Aveda salon. To get to that point means going to cosmetology school which takes roughly 1500+ hours (let's call it 10 months) and costs around $20,000. It's not the easiest of things to get through but it is a lot of fun!

Next, let's talk about training. At Thirty Hair, before starting on the floor solo, our stylists go through large amounts of training (We are talking 2-3 months) on everything from the basics to the extremes of hair. Our hair color training alone is one third of the time! And that's after they've completed school! Training includes memorizing the color wheel (which is vital), learning what colors remain, how to use the lowest developer possible to keep the hair healthy, and how to correct color (like that time you tried to manic panic your hair pink and now have a big job interview that you can't possibly show up with faded pink/orange hair for!)

The big difference with those boxes of color versus our boxes of color is that our boxes need to be custom blended to get your hair color. We look at the color you want to be, the color you have on your head, and formulate from there! Sometimes it even takes multiple formulas depending on what you want, any regrowth you have and the previous color on your ends!

Why Aveda?

So many times people ask us, why aveda?

Well, why not?

First, their hair color is AMAZING. It is as natural as you can get while also being an incredibly flexible color line that can do everything from blend grey, condition your hair while changing the tone of it, to covering grey or creating an incredible change on your hair. It also can give you those pastel colors or granny hair that's all the rage these days.

Second, their business philosophies and what they stand for is a huge plus both as a person and as a business. Have you ever checked it out?

beliefs

1. we believe in treating ourselves, each other, and the planet with care and respect.

2. we believe social responsibility is our responsibility.

3. we believe ecological and profit goals are mutually achievable.

4. we believe our authenticity and experience are our points of difference.

5. we believe in inspiring and educating people to integrate wellness and beauty in their lives.

6. we believe in the power of oneness: from our global image to a focused network.

7. we believe learning never ends.

8. we believe in encouraging innovation and empowered decision-making.

9. we believe our actions, products and services should always embody excellence.

10. we believe personal and organizational balance is the key to sustainable success.

11. we believe true leadership is delivered with passion and by example.

That's all part of aveda. It means that there's constantly awesome education coming down the pipeline both for our stylists and our management and desk team. It means instead of always fighting against other salons in business, we can work together, much like we got to do this past winter with one of our favorite salons around, Salon Marielle in Historic Ellicott City!

It also has just about all the products you need to start and end your day. We love that you can utilize one product line for your haircare, skincare, bodycare and makeup needs. Have you ever tried their shampure candles for lotion when your hands are cracked and dry? Let me tell you about how amazing that feels! Or have you tried one of their nourish-mint lip glazes? Us ladies at Thirty Hair may just be obsessed with their pigment, the fact that they smell like mint AND they happen to be anti-aging!
