The holidays are here and it’s your time to shine!  Drinks are flowing, selfies and group pics are non-stop and our outfit game is strong. Party season gives us the opportunity to play up our features by being a little more glamorous with our everyday hair and makeup.

Bonus points when using brands like Aveda which is non-toxic, cruelty-free and made with sustainable packaging materials—it puts a whole new meaning to “showing good face.”  No matter what your beauty philosophy is, as we close the decade, you should enter your holiday and 2020 festivities as nothing more than the best version of yourself.

In a perfect world, we’d style you for every appearance you make, but we know that’s not always the way it works out. So here are three DIY hair & makeup looks that you can wear to any party you go to—whether it’s formal, festive or casual.

FORMAL EVENT: RETRO WAVES & RED LIPS

Lucky you! If you’ve been invited to a formal or black-tie function, let us just say, you’re going to have a blast getting ready. We’re sure you have something spectacular picked out so whether your formal attire is a glittering gown, something slinky, or fashion-forward suiting, we love the idea of pairing formalwear with retro waves and a red lip.

Retro Waves

Voluminous, glossy waves are stunning and timeless. For hair that oozes celebrity status, check out how influencer Steph Willis creates Hollywood waves.

Red Lips

This year, Aveda introduced Feed My Lips Pure Nourish-mint Liquid Color Balms and Glosses, which includes Maraschino Color Balm—a beautiful cherry red that’s not too pink, not too orange, with a matte finish that won’t suck the life out of your lips and looks amazing on anyone. Top with a shimmery gloss like Feed My Lips Pure Nourish-mint Lip Gloss in Hibiscus Dew for an extra pouty look.

For application, we go by Aveda Global Artistic Director/Educator of Makeup Janelle Geason’s four-step method on how to create the perfect bold red lip, which is: treat, prime, line, color.

COCKTAIL PARTY: UPDO & SMOKEY EYES

Headed to cocktails with friends? A swanky get-together? Or a dressed-up company party? Go for something flirty and feminine. If your go-to look consists of your hair down with neutral makeup, level up your look by adding drama to your eyes and dressing up your hairstyle. A classic updo paired with a smoky eye is perfect for an evening of networking and lovely libations.

Classic Updo

Create a classic updo by simply using second-day curls and applying Aveda’s Shampure Dry Shampoo to your roots for volume, texture and oil absorption. Tease the roots and create a low ponytail, twist sections of the low pony in opposite directions to create a messy, undone-yet-sexy updo. Watch the way influencer Steph Willis creates a classic updo to see how she styles this look.

Smoky Eyes

The LBD of makeup looks—you can’t go wrong with smoky eyes. Use Aveda’s eye definer pencil in Black Orchid working from lash line to crease and then blend with a medium eye makeup brush. Apply to the bottom lash line as well and set with Eye Color Trio in Black Tulip.

CASUAL GET TOGETHER: BRAID & BOLD BROWS

Yes, we still want to look cute for the secret Santa, ugly sweater, friends-who-aren’t going-home-for-the-holidays parties. Dress up your holiday sweaters and jeans with a fun braid paired with simple makeup that focuses on your brows.

Fancy Braid

Cozy, festive and perfect for a casual get-together. Watch how Alexandra Beuter creates a gorgeous braid using Aveda products for creating volume, matte texture and shine.

Bushy Brows

After years of over-plucked commas and Insta-worthy illustrations, brows are finally starting to find a safe place in our daily beauty routine where we don’t have to spend a ton of time (and money) making them look perfect. Now it’s all about enhancing your natural shape and just filling the spots necessary.

Aveda’s Brow Definers come with a built-in spoolie to allow you to brush the brows up for fullness and then fill in with the pencil side, which comes in four smudge-proof, universal colors. Watch the video above to see how beauty blogger Ashley Klaty does her brows.
