New Year, New Hair!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Want to know how we kicked off the new year? Probably a lot like you all with some fun NYE parties, a lot of germs (this winter cold business is awful!) and most importantly with some New Education to kick start our year!

Today, we had Jeffrey Scott from Aveda in for a fantastic color class discussing 7 new ideas for our team. We spent our day watching and doing these new techniques, trying them all out on our mannequins!

Probably the most exciting part of the day was that each of these techniques and placements are actually wearable and do-able on everyone! This wasn't a class focused on crazy trends or things that takes hours to do or requires you come back for maintenance every 2 weeks.

A huge shout-out to Jeffrey Scott for a fantastic day! Thanks for visiting Maryland!

Take a look at some of our fun day!

Hair Color Changes, Pastel Hair and Olaplex...

Insight on Aveda Hair Color from one of our New Stylist's Isabelle...

Since I have finished hair school, I have played with lots of different color lines and lets just say Aveda is my favorite! I love that I can change each formula to fit everyone who sits in my chair because let's be honest we don't all have the same head of hair. That being said, I love to change my haircolor. Earlier this year I was a redhead and thanks to olaplex, within two visits, I was a blonde with no breakage! I decided I was ready for a change which turned into quite a project thanks to Sarah, who is training me on Aveda Color.

2015 is the year of pastels so of course I had to try out the trend!

Over the year, we saw so many stars rocking the pastel pinks, blues and purples. For a while now, I have been dying to have rose gold hair and haven't been able to find just the right formula in an easy fashion. I tried several brands as Aveda isn't always known for it's pastels and funky but Sarah pushed me to look outside the normal formulation box with Aveda and figure out how to break it down to make the perfect rose gold. Thanks to how Aveda formulates, with a little time and thought, you can make any of your color wishes come true if your stylist is willing to put in the effort.

When trying to figure it out, I turned to one of Aveda's best color educator's Lupe Voss for her insight. That's the cool part about this industry, we have all these amazing artists who are willing to help others grow. So I started with research on Lupe Voss's instagram and her group chat on hairbrained. After I found what I thought were good formulas, I took real hair and tried swatches of the best two formulas I had come up with for the perfect rose gold.

After a few hours of research and playing, I finally found the perfect shade and couldn't be happier with the results. Here's to beautiful pastel hair with Aveda! ~ Isabelle

What's Behind a Professional Hair Color

Ever wonder what it takes to get a professional hair color? Why it costs so much? Or what the difference between those boxes at the grocery store? In a series of blogs, we hope to debunk some myths about coloring your hair as well as help you to understand the process!

First off, to even access Aveda hair color, you must be a licensed cosmetologist or barber AND work in a licensed Aveda salon. To get to that point means going to cosmetology school which takes roughly 1500+ hours (let's call it 10 months) and costs around $20,000. It's not the easiest of things to get through but it is a lot of fun!

Next, let's talk about training. At Thirty Hair, before starting on the floor solo, our stylists go through large amounts of training (We are talking 2-3 months) on everything from the basics to the extremes of hair. Our hair color training alone is one third of the time! And that's after they've completed school! Training includes memorizing the color wheel (which is vital), learning what colors remain, how to use the lowest developer possible to keep the hair healthy, and how to correct color (like that time you tried to manic panic your hair pink and now have a big job interview that you can't possibly show up with faded pink/orange hair for!)

The big difference with those boxes of color versus our boxes of color is that our boxes need to be custom blended to get your hair color. We look at the color you want to be, the color you have on your head, and formulate from there! Sometimes it even takes multiple formulas depending on what you want, any regrowth you have and the previous color on your ends!
